Etta Jane (Webb) Price Obituary

Etta Jane (Webb) Price, a passionate, dedicated educator passed from this life on May 30, 2023. A graduate of Oneida High School and Tennessee Tech, she taught Special Needs students in Scott County for more than four decades.

Two weeks after graduating from high school in May 1958, Etta enrolled at Tennessee Tech to prepare for a lifetime of devotion to teaching students and adults with special needs. She spent several summers working with patients at Tennessee’s Clover Bottom Development Center in Nashville, when that institution housed around 1500 patients of all ages. Later she trained at a rehabilitation center out of state, specializing in creative art activities for Special Needs youngsters.

It was easy to see how much Etta’s young students and parents loved and respected her. Throughout the years when former students would see her somewhere in the community – in stores, church, the Christmas Parade, en route to her classroom, or to take something to a home-bound student – they would shout her name, run to her, and usually give her a big hug, then talk about how much they miss her class. Their parents never failed to tell her over and over how much she has meant to their child and, therefore, to their family. Etta retired from the school system in order to provide around-the-clock care for her mother in her mother’s last years.

Etta was preceded in death by her parents, Esau Webb and Flonnie Smith Webb Stephens; one sister, Ella Maye Webb Van Fleet; her niece, Marijke Van Fleet-Silvent; one special cousin, Paul T. Webb; one brother-in-law, Larry Clark; and grandparents, Richard and Mary Etta Terry Smith and Henry and Mary Jane Burchfield Webb.

She is survived by a daughter, Darla Walker (Russ) of Knoxville, TN; two sisters, Mary Lou Clark of Farmland, IN, and Lynna Ruth Standridge (John) of Chattanooga, TN; six nephews; and special cousins, R.H. Webb and David Webb, of Oneida. She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Friends may visit with the Price family on Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 12 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home with Bro. Dallas West officiating. Music will be provided by Dallas West.
