Our mother Nora Smith Newport, of Oneida, Tennessee passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the age of 96.

Nora was born on February 26, 1921 to Betty and Preston Smith in the Station Camp Community of what is now Big South Fork. This was mother’s favorite place on earth and always “home” to her.  She often shared stories of her life on the river with her brother, sisters, cousins and neighbors.  The fun times they shared, as well as the hardships.

Nora enjoyed gardening, she could make anything grow, canning and was a self-taught seamstress.  She was a member of the Oneida Church of Christ and Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

In addition to her parents, Nora was preceded in death by her husband Ewen Newport; brother Floyd Smith; sisters and brothers-in-law: Letha and Mitt Long, Ann Weller, Virgil Troxel and Thornton Sexton.

Survived by her children: Marielyn Hardin and husband Ty, E.J. Newport and Felecia Reynolds and husband Steve; grandchildren: Tira (Chad) Chastain, Scott (Susan) Hardin, Courtney (Barri) Hardin, Nicole (Buddy) Kitchings, Stephenie (Brandon) Crowley, Joshua (Stephanie) Reynolds, Laura (Bob) Waters, and Larry (Joanne) Wilson; great-grandchildren: Ashton Braden, Chandler Chastain, Chase Preston Chastain, Eli Hardin, Katelyn Kitchings, Lucas Reynolds, Layla Reynolds, Anna (Aaron) Friedhoff, Beverly Wilson, Sheri (Charles) Condon and Karen (Dirk Butson) Wilson; sisters: Rose Troxel and Ethel Sexton; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  A special thank you to Debbie Anderson, Lonna Cross and Rose Morgan, who she called her “girls” for taking such great care of her toward the end of her life.

Friends may visit with the Newport family on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home with John Polk II officiating.  Interment will follow in the Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery.
